Beginner's Guide

Beginner's Guide

Using biomedical treatments to improve the health of a child with autism may seem overwhelming at first. Remember, you will not be starting everything at once. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and you must pace yourself. Also, you must not think that you will be running entirely alone. Thousands of parents are already on this journey. Many have even completed it. Some of these parents will support you in your efforts. This beginner's guide is just one example of that support.

Please remember it is always important to seek appropriate medical advice before initiating any medical treatment for your child.

There are literally hundreds of possible biomedical treatments for autism; however, most fall into one of the following areas:

• Restricting substances that cause problems

• Healing the gut

• Reducing toxic load

• Reconnecting broken metabolic pathways

• Rebuilding the immune system

Many children with ASD struggle in all of these areas, and it is not usually possible to start with one category, finish your work there, and then move onto the next. Most children will receive treatments in more than one area, for an extended period of time.

Assessing the Situation
If biomedical treatments are to be successful, you must take some time to figure out (a) which ones might be best suited for your child, and (b) how you will decide which treatments are working. Choosing a medical practitioner, starting a biomedical diary, and using an assessment tool such as the ATEC can all help.   Read More
